I wanted to let you know that I received my order in the mail today. I must say that I am very impressed with it. The idea of this carrier is fantastic, and really fills the need we have. I was really surprised at the quality of your product, as it seems to be very heavy duty as well as being very practical and useable. I really like the fact that it is insulated. We have been trying to carry our epipen in a pocket or school binder up to this point, which does not work well as they have a tendency to fall out when you are not looking.

FEATURE ARTICLE: A Picture of Health, Medical Alert Tattoos Latest Trend


Everyone has their own opinion about what would happen to them following a serious injury or accident. Besides deciding to donate an organ or their body to science, people have begun to take a stand about whether they want to be resuscitated or kept on life support.


For decades, medical alert bracelets have served the purpose of letting paramedics and medical professionals know a person’s treatment preference, and of any medical conditions they may suffer from. Now a recent growing trend has sparked a new debate in the medical community about its effectiveness and general purpose, medical tattoos.


Inking a Preference


Medical tattoos that state the wearer’s treatment preferences, or that list any preexisting health conditions, have started to become an increasingly popular alternative to wearing more traditional Medical Alert bracelets. Tattoo artists all across North America have been receiving more customers asking for tattoos on their wrists, back, and chest that serve a more practical than artistic purpose. This trend seems to be especially popular with individuals who do a lot of traveling, and, surprisingly, with paramedics.


Reasons why a person might elect to get a medical tattoo vary, but can include the following:


  • Some jobs don’t allow employees to wear jewelry during their shift due to safety concerns. If someone who works in say a factory suffers an injury, and their medical alert bracelet is in their locker, then the attending paramedic or emergency room doctor will proceed with treatment without knowing of any existing conditions.
  • Bracelets and necklaces can become lost or broken. If someone with a serious health concern also happens to be a little absent minded, they run the risk of having an accident while waiting for a replacement to arrive.
  • Some people have metal allergies that make it impossible for them to wear any kind of jewelry, and they must find an alternative way of providing their medical information to emergency personnel.
  • It's all about style. Medical alert bracelets can make some people feel old and infirm, while getting a tattoo provides them with a suitable alternative that is more hip and fun.


Drawing the Line


Not everyone in the medical community is onboard with this recent trend. Many doctors and emergency medical personnel warn that paramedics and ER doctors, who are trained to look for Medical Alert bracelets, might overlook a tattoo because they are not expecting to find such important information in someone’s body art. Additionally, with no standardization existing in the tattoo community about where a medical tattoo should be placed on the body or what it should look like, even if EMTs did start to look for tattoos, they might not know where to start or what to look for. And while a tattoo might be permanent, a person’s medical condition can always change. Unless the wearer keeps getting their tattoo updated and current, the possibility exists that medical personnel will receive outdated information that could negatively affect that person's health.


Whether the medical tattoo trend continues to grow is anyone’s guess, but as long as people continue to look for ways to express their individuality, the right might just be here to stay.
